In 1989 American hip-hop was the province of scary, sweary hood-dwellers such as Ice-T and NWA- who sold gazillions of records while threatening to beat up on you and insult your lady friend - or ridiculous party rappers like Will Smith and MC Hammer, who did little other than dance inventively in large trousers.
